Parsing error on unknown column version on the dell updates

Issue: Error processing the Dell Update Catalog

Cause: Dell changed some values within the Dell Updates Catalog. The changes resulted in K1000 Appliance processing errors on the catalog while trying to import the new catalog. The K1000 log (kbox_log) shows the following error message:

Solution: Engineering is currently researching the issue. More information to follow.

Deploying patch MS 2589371 Update for SharePoint Workspace 2010 causes the explorer.exe and other exe to abruptly shut down

Title Deploying patch MS 2589371 Update for SharePoint Workspace 2010 causes the explorer.exe and other exe to abruptly shut down
Problem

During the deployment of the patch: 

causes the Explorer.exe and Firefox.exe to shutdown abruptly and with the combination of Kace Alert can causes the desktop icons to disappear and goes blank, rendering the desktop useless.

However, patching is still happening and until a reboot of the machine, the desktop will return back to normal.  The patch does get installed after the reboot.

Solution

We have filed a defect to get this addressed. 

Defect #: TS0054294
Workaround
  • Make this patch inactive OR
  • Remove patch schedule alerting (Security > Detect and Deploy Schedules > Click a schedule > Alerts > Show Patch Progress) to prevent the desktop to go blank and render useless.  Enabling the use of a prompt for the reboot (Security > Detect and Deploy Schedules > Click a schedule > Reboot Options) does not cause the desktop to go blank.

Microsoft Office patches that close Microsoft applications during the deployment

 The following patches will close the Microsoft Application during the deployment of the patch:

Microsoft recommends stopping all affected services and closing all applications that may use the affected files before installing the update.  

If the required files are being used, the application may automatically close. Auto-recovery can be used to restore open documents.

MS13-036 Security Bulletin Re-released from Microsoft

Today Microsoft released a new update to replace KB2823324, which was originally made available through MS13-036. As they previously discussed, they stopped distributing this update when they learned some customers were having issues. The new update, KB2840149, still addresses the Moderate security issue described in MS13-036, and should not cause these issues. If you have automatic updates enabled, you won’t need to take any actions. For those manually updating, they encourage you to apply this update at your earliest convenience

In addition to the above re-release for the patch, Lumension has also released a removal script (categorized as a Software Installer) for this as well titled:

System Management - Removal Only: MS13-036 Security Update for Windows (KB2823324)

You do not need to uninstall the expired 2823324 update before applying the 2840149 update; however, Microsoft strongly recommends it. 

If you do not remove the expired update, you will retain a listing for 2823324 under installed updates so you can use the new System Management patch.
