Power Calculation Assumptions

Our figures for power savings are based on this power savings calculator published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy "Energy Star Program". Using that calculator as a guideline, we have made the following assumptions:

  • CPUs go into "Standby" or "hibernate" mode when inactive (i.e., CPU, hard drive, etc. go to sleep)
  • The displays go into "Monitor shut down" mode when inactive (i.e., monitor/display goes to sleep)
  • The cost of electricity is assumed as $0.10 per kWh (Typical commercial rate)
  • A Default of 36% of computers are already turned off each night and hence not going to contribute to additional savings over night. This is based upon 2004 Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Report entitled "After-hours Power Status of Office Equipment and Inventory of Miscellaneous Plug-Load Equipment"

Power Management Settings

Desktops
  • Monitors enter low-power sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity
  • Computers enter system standby or hibernate mode after 20 minutes of inactivity
Notebooks
  • Displays enter low-power sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity
  • Computers enter system standby or hibernate mode after 20 minutes of inactivity
  • Typical hours in "sleep" mode using power managed PCs from LBNL (rather than always in "Idle" mode):
    • Average number of hours in "idle" mode per year: 602 hours/year
    • Average number of hours in "sleep" mode per year: 5,490 hours/year

Energy Use

Power consumed by a representative:

  • monitor in active mode : 37W
  • monitor in active mode : 3W
  • desktop computer in active mode : 84W
  • desktop computer in sleep mode : 6W
  • notebook (both display and computer) in active mode : 20W
  • notebook (both display and computer) in sleep mode : 1W

*Notebook power consumption assumes 50% of power gets used to power the computer and 50% for the display

PC Usage

PC are assumed to be used 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, with 22 non-working days per year (vacation days, sick days, holidays, etc.)
