CMDB: Options for the Fortune 100,000
Introduction
IT systems management has evolved from single-handed support for managing all of an organization’s IT infrastructure and assets to the requirement for more sophisticated systems that control expanding equipment inventories, networks and application portfolios. Regardless of technique, the goal has remained for every organization to deliver IT services that support business processes effectively, economically and in a reliable way.
To that end has emerged the Configuration Management Database (CMDB), a single repository designed for discovering, tracking, managing and storing configuration information across the enterprise. While often perceived as a solution suitable only for the largest and most complex organizations, this paper will examine the definition and role of a CMDB, including a brief description of its origin, business value, market applicability, and why it can be an important component in an overall IT management strategy for mid-market, Fortune 100,000 organizations. It will also examine some of the evaluation criteria Fortune 100,000 organizations should consider when implementing a configuration management solution.
