Remote Replication, Administration and Site Management

Effective Remote Office Management with the K1000

The successful businesses of the future are setting the foundation for that success during tough times by investing in cost efficient infrastructure that supports future growth now. Enabling IT services for the valuable knowledge workers who will fuel that growth is critical. These users are typically remote, mobile and demanding.

Managing remote offices can be extremely time-consuming and expensive, if not downright impossible, without an effective way to stage and cache payloads (applications, patches and scripts) at remote sites.

The K1000 can effectively manage remote offices without the need for dedicated hardware at those locations through K1000 remote replication and alternate download locations. These capabilities dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of remote administration for remote sites while allowing administrators to maintain centralized control.

Remote Replication

Remote Replication

Remote replication allows all K1000 payloads to be automatically sent to a designated network share at a remote office. Any system at that remote office can then pull applications, patches and scripts from that share versus the centralized K1000. A single centralized K1000 Management Appliance can stage software libraries, script dependencies, file syncs, agent upgrades and patches to remote sites without the need for dedicated hardware or personnel at remote facilities. The remote replication share set up is easy to deploy and maintain, and dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of managing a multi-site organization. K1000 remote replication makes this feasible by supporting a number of bandwidth aware features:

  • Granular control over the timing and contents of staged assets.
  • Copying of assets can be bandwidth controlled and restarted after a connection failure
  • Updates are scheduled using a simple, holistic UI for easy visibility and co-ordination across tasks
  • Target clients for the replication share can be defined using dynamic groups
  • Replication shares can be set up on local or Samba network drives
  • Scheduled incremental synchronization and bandwidth throttling help minimize network utilization while keeping all remote sites updated with current deployment assets
  • The replication agent can run on Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. No dedicated system required.
  • Clients losing replication share connectivity can failover to the central K1000 or preserve bandwidth by being set to stop and report failure

Alternate Download Locations

Alternate download location functionality allows payloads to be staged on a one-off basis for a particular deployment. Managed systems continue to check in with the centralized K1000, but get their deployments from local resources.

K1000 replication and alternate download location functionality does not require dedicated server hardware or personnel at the remote location, but rather can utilize existing resources such as a DFS source, a UNC address or even an HTTP location, keeping the cost and complexity of remote administration to a minimum.
