Device Discovery, Hardware and Software Inventory

Detailed Hardware and Software Inventory for Windows, Mac and Linux Systems

Understanding what hardware and software are installed across an organization is the most basic step to effective systems management, and often one of the most difficult to complete accurately without major investments in time and resource. Crucial areas such as license compliance, security and the knowledge to accurately perform upgrades and migrations can all be automated using K1000 inventory capabilities, saving time and money by eliminating manual, error prone tasks.

The K1000 provides detailed hardware and software inventory information for Windows, Mac and Linux systems. It auto-discovers network-wide hardware and software configurations through managed agents or agentless network scanning, for a complete computer inventory. Detailed configuration information is captured for desktops, notebooks, servers, printers and networking equipment such as routers and switches.

Agentless Device Discovery and SNMP Inventory

The K1000 can use its agentless capabilities to scan an entire network, and to identify and catalog all network connected devices. SNMP and open port information is also reported for each device. Agentless device inventory is useful for identifying systems for K1000 agent deployment, as well as tracking devices where installing agents is not practical or possible.

Dynamic Grouping

Dynamic groups provide a convenient way to implement policies in software distribution, patching and configuration management by allowing like computers to be grouped as targets to be recipients of these specific activities. Groupings can be created using such criteria as similar hardware and software, network location or department and/or organizational unit. As an example, consider a group set up to free up disk space and improve performance by initiating a defrag disks operation automatically. Machines which hit a disk space free threshold could be filtered into the group dynamically, and would automatically exit after the operation has completed.

Agent-based Hardware and Software Inventory

Once the K1000 agent is deployed, a more detailed hardware and software inventory of managed systems is available. An inventory of all computers and installed software on those systems can be viewed, including all software titles and the systems on which they are installed. Direct links to PC manufacturers' sites are also provided based on discovered service tag or serial numbers. The K1000 agent runs a full hardware and software inventory on a target system the first time it is installed, and will run subsequent inventories based on a configurable inventory interval. New hardware and software inventory information is reported to the K1000 each time the agent connects to the appliance.

Reporting

The K1000 provides an easy-to-use web interface for access to inventory information as well as wizard-based reporting. Hardware and software inventory can be viewed and reported from both the Inventory tab as well as through the Alerts and Reports section of the K1000 user interface. Complete installed software reporting, including historical information, is provided including operating system, applications, registry entries, files, and hotfix and patch status.
