This FAQ is for customers running the K2000 version of 3.2 or earlier. If running 3.3 the naming rule post installation task will work for Windows 7. More information on this post-installation task can be found in the administrators guide and on http://mystuff.clarke.co.nz/MyStuff/wsname.asp.
Download wsname.exe. Create a batch file that calls wsname.exe with its commandline switches, like:
wsname.exe /N:$SERIALNUM
Now, select the batch file and wsname together and zip them up. Upload them to the K2000 as a post installation application item, and type in "call name_of_batchfile.bat"
If the customer needs help with using WSNAME.exe to rename the systems, say using a file with MAC addresses & corresponding names and the like, they can check out http://mystuff.clarke.co.nz/MyStuff/wsname.asp for help.
If they want to both join a domain and rename the clients we recommend that they use the unattend file they created during or with SYSPREP to join the domain. Or they can use this FAQ for more assistance:
http://www.kace.com/support/resources/kb/article/How-to-rename-a-computer-and-join-it-to-a-Windows-domain-Image-Deployment
If they want to use the FAQ above to both rename and join a domain for a Windows 7 client we will need to make a small change since the WSNAME.exe included with those scripts is out of date & won’t work with Windows 7.
