Why Does the KACE K1000 Agent Not Install On My 64-Bit Windows Operating System?

The K1000 Agent version 5.1 and older relies on .Net Framework 1.1 service pack 1 be installed on the Windows host operating systems. This includes:

  • Windows Vista 64-bit
  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • Windows XP Professional 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2003 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2008 64-bit

Problem

For quite some time now our agent has included a distribution of the .Net 1.1 runtime that would automatically install if detected as missing AND if you deployed the Agent through the K1000 Agent Provisioning or using the K1000 agent batch file. You could also use this runtime to install it manually. However, this runtime only supports the following OSes:

Windows 2000; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2003 x64 editions; Windows Server 2008 Datacenter; Windows Server 2008 Enterprise; Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2008 Standard; Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Home Basic; Windows Vista Home Premium; Windows Vista Starter; Windows Vista Ultimate; Windows XP; ref: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

Solution

Therefore, you need to download a distribution for your OSes. This is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8f5654f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&displaylang=en

You will also need to apply SP1 hotfix which will bring the version of your .Net to 1.1.4322.2407. To check this please examine the file c:\windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v1.1.4322\Mscorld.dll SP1 hotfix can be obtained here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928366

The supported OSes include: TabletPC; Windows 2000; Windows 2000 Advanced Server; Windows 2000 Professional Edition ; Windows 2000 Server; Windows 2000 Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2003 x64 editions; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition for 64-Bit Itanium-Based Systems; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter x64 Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition; Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition; Windows Server 2008 Datacenter; Windows Server 2008 Enterprise; Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems; Windows Server 2008 Standard; Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Home Basic; Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Home Premium; Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Starter; Windows Vista Ultimate; Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition; Windows XP; Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2

Other Notes

In the future we hope to remove the dependency on the .Net 1.1 Framework.

Please note that .Net 2.0 and .Net 3.0 are not backwards compatible with 1.1. If you have 2.0 or 3.0, but do not have 1.1, you will still need to install .Net 1.1 sp1

Here is an article on how to determine what version of .Net Framework you have installed http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/kb00318785.aspx
