Virtual Appliances: Are you Ready?
More than twenty-five years ago, the IT industry witnessed the rise of the network operating system. Based on the simple concept of file sharing versus disk sharing, applications, such as Novell’s Netware, enabled the adoption of a client/server architecture and ushered in a new era of computing. While the PC had already exploded on the computing scene and was in the process of revolutionizing how businesses exploited IT, it was connecting these machines and their resources that harnessed their power and moved computing beyond the mainframe era.
While a boon for organizations, the new computing paradigm brought with it a new level of complexity for administrators. No longer were computers relegated to a specialized back office with restricted access and a high degree of control. Rather, computers and their access were spread throughout organizations, requiring administrators to rethink how to manage their dispersed infrastructure and come up with innovative tools to do so.
Virtualization marks the next major milestone on the computing timeline. Like the move from mainframe computing, virtualization is bringing with it new challenges that require administrators to rethink how they manage their IT resources and the tools they use. Today KACE announced the industry’s first virtual systems management appliance, the Virtual KBOX. For the first time, organizations that have invested in VMware Infrastructure can deploy V-KBOX natively as software on that infrastructure. This provides all the benefits of a hardware appliance: fast deployment, easy maintenance, and affordability, but with the added benefits of virtualization, including high scalability, better resource utilization, and additional maintenance and support options. Of course organizations can still deploy KBOX as a hardware appliance, but now have the increased flexibility to leverage and prepare for this new computing era.
