Virtual Appliances: Are you Ready?

More than twenty-five years ago, the IT industry witnessed the rise of the network operating system. Based on the simple concept of file sharing versus disk sharing, applications, such as Novell’s Netware, enabled the adoption of a client/server architecture and ushered in a new era of computing. While the PC had already exploded on the computing scene and was in the process of revolutionizing how businesses exploited IT, it was connecting these machines and their resources that harnessed their power and moved computing beyond the mainframe era.

While a boon for organizations, the new computing paradigm brought with it a new level of complexity for administrators. No longer were computers relegated to a specialized back office with restricted access and a high degree of control.
